Matt Benson

Matt Benson comes to us from Cascades Country Club. He is a member of the PGA working on his Class A certification. Matt received his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Health from Stephen F. Austin University, and his Associate Degree in Nursing from Panola College.
Matt has played and coached sports at the highest level. He played baseball through the collegiate level to professional with the Milwaukee Brewers organization; and has coached kids from Pee Wee to the D1 collegiate level. Matt led Union Hill High School to their first appearance at the UIL State finalist game in 2006, coming up short of winning the state championship by 1 run to Anderson-Shiro in the 10th inning. Matt has received countless awards and recognitions as both a player and coach; including 1st Team All American 3rd Baseman at Panola Junior College, 1st Team All American Pitcher at Northwestern University, East Texas Baseball Coach of the Year and SFA Alumni Coach of the Year.
Deeply rooted in East Texas Matt chose a career in nursing. Throughout his 22 years at Truman W. Smith Children’s Care Center where he cared for medically fragile children, Matt never lost his competitive nature and enthusiasm for coaching. After picking up golf at the age of 30, he introduced his sons to the game and coached them through numerous junior golf tournaments and high school; where both of them reached the state tournament. His oldest, Jacob, played as an individual in 2014; and his youngest son, Sam, qualified all 4 of his high school years, medaling as a team twice and finishing 5th place individual his senior year, and his currently playing D1 golf at Texas A&M Commerce.
Matt is from Hallsville but resides in Gilmer with his wife of 28 years, Melinda.
